Ingredients
- 4 Granny Smith apples, or tart apples of choice
- 4 Honeycrisp apples, or sweet apples of choice
- 8 c water
- 1 large orange
- 1/2 tsp. ground cloves
- 4 cinnamon sticks
- 1/2 tsp. ground allspice
- 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
- 1 c dark brown sugar
Instructions
- Peel and core apples. It is not necessary to peel the apples but it will make for a lighter, cleaner cider.
- Chop apples into chunks and place in slow cooker. Peel orange, break apart sections, and place in slow cooker.
- Pour in water and add in all spices and sugar. Give a quick stir and then set slow cooker to low and cook for 7-8 hours.
- When time is up and apples are very soft, place a colander over a large bowl and pour cider through.
- Remove cinnamon sticks. Using a potato masher, press the fruit to remove as much of the juice as you can. Set colander aside.
- Pour cider through a fine mesh strainer back in to slow cooker. Rinse strainer and then pour cider through strainer back into bowl.
- Repeat these steps until the strainer is clean when the cider is poured through.
- The apple cider may be served warm or cold.
- To serve warm, pour cider into slow cooker and set to warm.
- If you prefer to serve cider cold, pour it through the strainer into a pitcher and refrigerate.
